During our outing to Saguaro Lake, Ed and Penny told us about a couple of hikes in and around the Superstition Mountains. One that they mentioned was Massacre Grounds so on Wednesday we headed out to find the trail.

Rain, Sedona, and snow.

On Thursday morning we left Willcox in a rainstorm having decided that Sedona was our next destination, a 330 mile trip. It turned out to be a rough day for Sigrun. Poor visibility, spray from semis, slick roads and heavy rain made her nervous, something I had never noticed at home.

Chiricahua

On Wednesday morning we left Bisbee and continued southeast on Hwy 80 toward Douglas and the Mexican border. We didn’t have a firm plan for the day. The “itinerary” called for a visit to Chiricahua National Park on Thursday morning to catch a tram up to a trailhead and then hike back to park headquarters, a trek of 10 miles or so. Read more

Tombstone and Bisbee

We found better accommodation in Tombstone and went into town to for dinner at the Longhorn Restaurant. By that time most of the main street was shut down. The next day we visited Boothill Cemetery. I didn’t take any photos of it or main-street Tombstone mainly because they are so well known in books, movies and folklore.

Wandering a cemetery feels a bit ghoulish (although busloads of kids seemed to be having too much fun in there) but is very interesting. It makes you think about how short life was back then and the various ways a person could die, particularly between 1880 and 1882. Read more
